A Wide-Open Market for Ornamental Concrete

Products in Every Community

Big Rewards Offered

The business of making ornamental concrete products
shows startling possibilities. It is a field unhampered by
being crowded; it is still wide open to energetic men. Ihe
many uses to which these ornamental and utility products
can be put is an indication of the immense market that is
practically without limit. Someone in your community is

going to supply this wonderful,
waiting market. You can be that
man if you wish.

Just read what is being earned
by the men already in the business.
What they are accomplishing in
spare time shows the handsome
profits that you can make in this
field. No limit is placed on the
amount of money you can earn;
profits are in proportion to the
amount of time and energy you put
into the business.

Nurseryman-Florist

Clears $480.00 on

Side Line

A Pennsylvania Flor-
ist, like a great many
others in the business,
started to make Orna-
mental Products as a
side line. Over 280
vases, flower boxes,
bird baths, etc. were
quickly sold.

From 400 to 7507<r Profit
Earned as Side Line
Manufacturer of Concrete
Blocks and Burial Vaults in
Wisconsin writes that he is
selling lots of vases for $7.50
to $12.50 which cost him but
$1.50 to make.

A Non- Competitive Bi

A Big Future

The existing market for orna-
mental concrete products offers a
real opportunity right now, with
greater rewards to he realized the
longer one is in the business. The
future is full of possibilities for
the men who get started now.

There are no handicaps or obstacles to overcome; tne nem
is remarkably free from competition. Selling prices are
unusually high, thereby yielding big profits. It's a busi-
ness you can control. Raw materials are easily and cheap-
ly obtained. You can dictate selling prices, sales policies,
and the profit desired.

You can make this business as big and as profitable as
you desire. You can operate during spare time, or as a
side-line, or make it a full time enterprise. It pays hand-
somely for every hour devoted to it.

You Can Start on a Spare Time Basis

You do not need a shop or factory to make these orna-
mental products. You can start with a few molds and
make your products during spare time in any convenient
place that affords protection from rain, sun and hot winds.
Many operators use their basements, garages, barns and
similar places. The profits from the business, however,
will probably suggest your own shop later. This can be
financed, as well as additional molds, out of your earned

profits.

Many of the men whose earnings have been quoted on
this and other pages are working on a spare time basis.

Select a few patterns from the following pages. You will
find the making of these products not only highly profit-
able, but intensely interesting. Pleasure and handsome
rewards will be yours.

Men Already in Business Find it a

Profitable Side-Line

Manufacturers of concrete products, supply dealers, lum-
ber dealers, coal dealers, contractors and builders, sand
and gravel companies— and innumerable other men in
business find it surprisingly profitable to make these prod-
ucts as a side-line. In this way men are kept busy dur-
ing off-seasons when work is slack on the regular line.
The problem of keeping men continuously occupied and
producing a profit is thus solved.

In many instances the making of these products carries
the entire overhead expense of the regular business be-
sides earning a profit. In other instances, this side-line
has proven more profitable than the main business.

A Display of Ornamental Products Does

the Selling

You cannot exhaust the sell-
ing points of well made, properh
designed ornamental concrete
products any more than you can
exhaust the market that exists
for these products. Simply dis-
play them and let people know
you are in the business. The products will sell themselvt
They are the kind of products that people want, and they
will order them from you if you are in a position to supply
their needs.

Products made with UTILITY Molds are permanent and
everlasting, — because they are made of concrete. The
designs are classical in origin and extremely popular.
There's a UTILITY product for every use, and an appro-
priate one for every setting.

Every home or building, and its surroundings, can be
made more beautiful with such ornamental items as vase
flower boxes, lawn benches, sun dials, bird baths, etc.
Country Clubs use them. Ceme-
teries call for large quantities.

Parks and public grounds need
them. They are desired for en-
trances to estates and for fences
around private grounds. Then there
are the countless uses for porches,
steps, piers, chimneys, etc. All you
need do is to reach after this ex-
tensive market and you will get the
business.

Building: Supply Co. Makes $575.00 on

Ornamental Side Line

Building Supply Dealers have seasonal
dull periods. This Ohio company fills
the gap by making Ornamental Prod-
ucts. Their first experience brought
them a handsome dividend, — $575.00
clear.

Cost and Selling Prices

an Explanation

We have indicated how much the materials will
cost you to make the products described in this
catalog. Our figures are purposely high, and if
you can get your sand and gravel for less than
$1.50 a ton and cement for less than $1.00 per
sack, you can count on a lower cost than we state.

The selling prices we give are based on aver-
ages. You can adjust them up or down to suit
your circumstances. The margin of profit is more
than ample to allow a big latitude in the fixing
of your prices. The prices we give should be your
guide in fixing your price list.

So profitable is this business of making orna-
mental products that you actually sell concrete
for from 4 to 66 cents per pound while the cost is
less than a cent a pound. That's really the secret
to your success in this business.

The UTILITY Adjustable 0. G. Cornice Mold

The blocks made by this mold are used extensively in practic-
ally all building operations. Then, too, it is the right kind of a
unit for any work of an ornamental nature, such as on porches,
posts, piers, chimney tops, etc.

You really have a hundred different molds because it will

make over 100 different sizes. No job need
ever be turned down no matter what dimen-
sions are called for.

The range in length and width is from 4 to
24 inches. The height is 6 inches. The top is
six inches smaller than the base, thus always
preserving good proportions. The porch de-
signs on page 8 show some of the innumerable
uses.

The mold is made of solid gray iron casting,
with an aluminum finish to guard against rust.
The four sides clamp together in a perfect fit
and no amount of tamping will throw them out
of alignment.

The UTILITY Adjustable Core should be used with this Mold (see
page 10). Specify No. 9 O. G. when ordering. The shipping weight is

The UTILITY Adjustable All-Steel Cap, Sill and Step Mold

The fact that this mold will make every conceivable size
or dimension stone from 2 to 24 inches wide and 2 to 72
inches long, is reason enough why this mold is so profit-
able to use. The blocks are absolutely true in all dimen-
sions and are used for caps, sills and steps, lintels, porch
railings, bases and innumerable other ways. It is, in
truth, a hundred molds in one.

This is an all-steel mold; the plates have
absolutely no spring and tamping will not
force them out of alignment. This is a
highly important factor when accuracy in
line and dimensions is essential. A wooden
mold would cost as much and not be any-
where near as satisfactory.

The mold is quickly set up because it is
self-squaring. The plates are held in rigid
position by special heavy malleable clamps
which are furnished with the mold. The
UTILITY Adjustable Cap, Sill and Step
Mold is available in three heights. Specify

The Simple Way to Cash-In on the Steadily Increasing Demand

for Good Concrete Brick

Most men directly connected with the building industry
have long understood and appreciated the various big ad-
vantages of concrete brick. Within the last few years the
general public also has become greatly interested. As
the result there is today a big demand. Equally important
from your point of view, the demand continues to grow
day by day.

Concrete brick are dense, durable, attractive and more
economical than clay or pressed brick. But the only way
to manufacture them profitably is to make them in quanti-
ties. This does not necessarily
mean that you have to go to the
expense of getting a high-priced
power machine. You can start in
a very profitable line with the
UTILITY One Man Brick Machine
which (making ten standard size
brick at each operation) will turn
out per day, 2,000 standard brick
of any desired face.

This method produces brick with an exceptionally dura-
ble and attractive facing. The results are much better
than with other methods. Users of this machine find their
product in popular demand because of its good quality.

The outfit includes a stamping die to make an attractive
rock-faced brick. It also includes a mold for making
round-corner brick.

The accessories are as follows:

The UTILITY is the only ma-
chine which allows the brick to be
removed and set down to harden
without turning over. This means
less money, less expense and per-
fect bricks*

HANDSOME FACE BRICK

Any desired face or color may be produced on
the top of the brick before removing: from
machine — an exclusive feature in this UTILITY
Machine. It costs a little more to make face
brick but it pays because the profit is much
greater.

ty the machine will pay for it-
self in a matter of days and then

its for you. Shipping weight,
complete machine, 250 pounds.

Durable All-Steel Construction

The UTILITY Brick Machine is made of steel. It is a
strong and rugged machine, thoroughly braced to stand
severe service. It will last a lifetime. It is light and ex-
ceptionally easy to handle.

Simplicity of Operation

There is a set of ten molds, separated by heavy, cold-
drawn steel dividing plates which are moved back and
forth by a two-handled lever. A removable hopper is
located on top for filling. This also smooths off the top
of the brick after tamping.

The wet procc is used because it makes the strongest,
densest and most attractive brick. A wet mixture is
poured into the hopper, so that it flows over the molds to
a depth of about half an inch. A semi-dry mixture is then
added and tamped, absorbing the excess of water and pro-
ducing a smooth, dense surface. The whole set of ten
bricks are started, finished and carried away on the same
wooden pallet without turning over. There is no chance
of cracking or chipping the brick.

The UTILITY Hand Tile Machine

Drain tile made of good concrete are far
superior to any other kind of tile. There
are any number of proofs to support this
assertion. To convince yourself you need
only look at an exposed pile of clay tile and
see how it has disintegrated, chipped and
peeled off. Then look at a pile of concrete
tile. Every one perfect, and better than
the day they were made. The fact is, con-
crete tile improve with age and exposure,

elements that play havoc with the clay
product.

Concrete drain tile would be used in

preference to clay tile even if they cost
more. But they cost less. And that's why

you will find such a large market for thi
product. Remember, too, that every job
calls for large quantities of tile. Your
earnings are therefore of big amount.

The only reliable way to make concrete
drain tile is by using the principle of the
revolving packer head. The thin walls do
not permit of tamping. The UTILITY
Tile Machine makes the tile the right waj
— the only way for perfect results.

A Marvel of Simplicity

Again you see the keynote of the Utility Line exempli-
fied in the UTILITY Tile Machine. Simplicity. Set it up
anywhere, against a building or a wall or a post. Anyone
can operate it and secure the best kind of tile. Place the
casing on the platform under the hopper. Put in some
concrete. Turn the packer head up through the casing,
and the concrete is packed so hard that the casing can be
removed at once. No pallets are needed. It is a machine
built rugged to stand any amount of hard use. Absolute-
ly practical and efficient. Nothing whatever complicated
in the machine or in the operation.

Farm Market

If you want to realize how much drain tile is used
for farm land drainage, just keep your eyes open as
you drive through the country. You will see pile
after pile of tile waiting to be placed in the ground.
And for every tile you see, just bear in mind that
hundreds more are needed and will be bought.

For farm drainage, concrete tile are by far the
best for the purpose. If clay tile is being used in
your community it most likely is because no one is
offering concrete tile. You can get this business by
going after it. And the attractive profits certainly
make it worth your while to develop this unlimited

UTILITY Sewer Pipe Molds are Preferred

Naturally, you want to make good sewer pipe. More
than that, you want to make the kind of pipe that in every
way meet the specifications of city, state and highway
engineers. That's why you will want to use UTILITY
Molds.

The most expensive machines cannot produce more per-
fect pipe than UTILITY Molds. And yet these molds are
so simple to operate and so inexpensive. Your UTILITY
Pipe, for sewers and culverts, will meet every require-

ment as to quality and dimensions; your prices will meet
all competition and yield a splendid profit.

There are only a few parts to a UTILITY Pipe Making
Outfit. The outer form or casing, of heavy sheet steel
rigidly reinforced, is in two sections. That's the scientific,
easy-to-operate way of having them. The inner casing or
core, also of heavy sheet steel, works mechanically. A few
simple accessories like pallets, rings, cone and hopper com-
plete the outfit. All exceedingly simple and sturdy enough
for a. lifetime of nrofitable service.

Low Costs — Big

Prices

Because the more ex-
pensive clay pipe set the
price standard for sewer
pipe, you can make this
product at an attractive
profit with UTILITY Molds.
A twelve-inch pipe, for ex-
ample, calls for only 26
cents worth of cement,
sand and gravel. The aver-
age price for this size is
60 cents per foot. In other
words, you sell the two-
foot 26-cent pipe for $1.20.
The larger the size, the
greater the profit.

Simplified One-Man Operation

The simple ease with which UTILITY Molds operate will
enable you to make a variety of sizes in large quantities.
One man or three or more can be at work at the same
time, producing good pipe most economically. All that
needs to be done is to set up the forms, fill with concrete,
tamp, remove the molds. After ten days the pipe is ready
to be delivered to the job. You cannot find a simpler meth-
od, nor one that produces higher grade pipe conforming to
all specifications. All because UTILITY Molds are de-
signed to do their work quickly, easily, efficiently and
perfectly at the lowest cost.

The Basis of Sewer Pipe Making is the

Butt-Joint Outfit

Whether you want to make bell-end or socket- joint pipe,
you need the butt-joint outfit. It is the basis; attachments
are added to make the other types. This outfit consists
of a two-section outer casing, an inside mechanical core,
a quantity of regular pallets as specified below, a metal
cone to cover the core, a metal hopper for easy filling, and
a tamper. All of this equipment is included in the outfit
for which prices are listed below. Your order should call
for this Butt-Joint Outfit plus whatever attachments you
desire.

To Make Socket-Joint Pipe

You need the butt-joint outfit plus a header (see Fig. 1
opposite page) and as many socket forming rings as regu-
lar pallets. For example: to make 12-inch socket-joint pipe
you should order the 12-inch butt-joint outfit and the 12-
inch socket-joint attachment as listed in the prices below.
This will give you, besides the regular outfit, eight regu-
lar pallets, eight socket forming rings, and one header— twtt ttv ilm i j tt n/r i i ^
enough equipment so that you can practically use the out- tlllL.Hl Molds Have a Mechanical Core
fit continuously with the tamp process.

To Make Bell-End Pipe

You should order the butt-joint outfit plus the bell-end
attachment. This attachment consists of two top ring
forms, the outer one fastening on to the outer casing, and
the inner, or smaller one, fitting over the core. These
forms give the bell shape to the pipe. Only the regular
pallets are required. The illustration above shows the
butt-joint outfit with the bell-end attachment.

The patented mechan-
ical core that is a
part of UTILITY
Pipe Making Outfits
is a great aid to
making perfect pipe
in quick time and at
low cost. Pushing
down on the lever ex-
pands the core to its
correct circle and size.
It locks in shape. To
remove, pull up the
lever and the core
contracts to a smaller
circle, thereby permit-
ting easy removal
without touching the
finished pipe.

I

Pallets Furnished with Each

Outfit

So that you may have the most use out of
your outfit, a quantity of regular pallets are
included. If you only had one pallet, you
would have to wait until the pipe hardened
sufficiently to remove it before you could
make the second pipe. The quantities we
furnish with each outfit are the number
usually required. The number included are
as follows:

12 Pallets with 4 and 6-inch outfits.
8 Pallets with 8, 10 and 12-inch out-
fits.

4 Pallets with 14, 15, 16, 18 and 20-
inch outfits.

2 Pallets with 24, 30, 36, 42, 48 and
60-inch outfits.

The same number of socket forming rings
as pallets are included with each socket-joint
attachment.

The equipment included with each outfit
consists of 2-section outer casing, inside
core, pallets, cone, hopper and tamper.
Ready to use as soon as you get it.

UTILITY All-Steel Molds for Double

Strength Highway Culvert Pipe

Part of the billions of dollars being spent for improved and new
highways goes to buy the kind of Double-Strength Culvert Pipe made
by UTILITY All-Steel Molds. By using these molds you are assured
that your pipe will comply with the requirements of your State's
Highway Department. In principle, they are the same kind of molds
as the UTILITY Sewer Pipe Outfits. They use the two-section outer
casing idea and they also have the patented mechanical core. The
only essential difference is that these are big-scale pipe molds, and as
such they are made much heavier and much stronger. They permit
your pipe to be reinforced if the specifications call for this added
strength. In operation, they are just as simple as the smaller UTILI-
TY Sewer Pipe Molds. You will have no difficulty whatever in mak-
ing the highest grade Double-Strength Pipe if you follow the instru*
tions that are supplied with the outfits.

RE INFOR.CE D ConCRE TE Cul VER T PiPE

To make Double Strength Bell-End Culvert Pipe you need
nly the Bell-End Mold and a few Bottom Rings. The Mold is
n lly an outfit and consists of the two-piece outer casing of
heavily reinforced steel, the patented mechanical steel core, a
11-forming head, cone and hopper. The pipe rests on a metal
allet called the Bottom Ring. You should have more than one
of these rings because the large pipe have to stand longer be-
fore they can be removed from the ring. In ordering, we suggest
that you secure the Mold and about six Bottom Rings.

The Mold for making Socket Joint Pipe is the same as above
i « ept that it does not have the bell-forming head. One header,
to form the tongue, is all you need with each mold. About six
Bottom Socket Rings for making the sockets and to use as pal-
lets should be ordered.

Extra Lengths

Prices listed at the right
are for molds 3 feet in
length. To make longer
pipe you need longer
molds. The same rings or
pallets are used regardless
of length. Prices for these
extra length molds are as
follows:

UTILITY Fence Post Outfit

For the past 20 years the leading railroads have been
using concrete fence posts, including such big systems as
the Pennsylvania, Northern Pacific, Michigan Central, L.
& N., Erie, D. L. & W M etc. They also are used by the
War Dept. and Dept. of Agriculture. The recommendation

f these big users is assurance that concrete posts are in
large demand. Most of the millions of posts now in use
ha been made with the machine we offer. It uses the

shaking" system which insures greatest strength and
density. Makes 6 posts in one operation. The entire ma-

hine is made of steel, including molds and frame. This
outfit will enable you to get the business.

An Exclusive, Patented Device

United States Letters Patent, Dated
Feb. 1923, cover the design and operation
of this mixer. There is no other concrete
mixer so simple and so scientifically cor-
rect. It has been designed especially for
concrete products plants.

SHOVEL MIXER

A Scientific Mixer Ahead of the Times

The mixing of your concrete is of greater importance
than any other operation if you are determined to make
concrete produc 3 of the highest quality. Molds and ma-
chines can make products only as strong as the concrete
delivered to them by the mixer.

The Success Shovel Mixer is scientifically correct. It
is steps ahead of all other mixers, especially for use in
products plants. It makes 20 per cent stronger concrete
by actual test. It takes less power to operate. It
up production. It is absolutely fool-proof.

peeds

You put the cement and

bearings. The stationary shovels scoop up the material,

aggregate into the bowl
The bowl revolves on ball

throw it to the side, back again, works it under, trowels it,
stirs it, — and in a minute the cement, while dry, is mixed
through the sand and gravel, coating every particle. Then
you add the right amount of water. In another minute or
two the mix is ready for use. Pull down on the lever, up
goes the center cone, and out through the bottom comes
the perfectly mixed concrete. Absolutely simple, yet the
most thorough mixer of all. Much less work and much
larger output.

This is the mixer which is so largely responsible for the
leadership of those who operate Success Products Plants.

UTILITY Shovel Mixer — Mixes Better Concrete at Lower Cost

This mixer uses the same
scientific shovel principle as
the larger Success Shovel
Mixer. It is the same except
for size and price.

With the UTILITY Shovel
Mixer you can handle 2%
cubic feet of material per
batch. That gives an ample
quantity of concrete for mak-
ing the ornamental and other
products shown in this cata-
log.

Operation is by hand or
power. It is the best, and the
most economical mixer for
use in making UTILITY Con-
crete Products. Likewise, it
is a wonderful mixer for mix-
ing plaster, paint, stucco,
mortar. Many plants use this
mixer for mixing facings and
colors. In fact, anything that
requires thorough mixing.

Sturdy Construction with Greatest

Simplicity

The illustration above shows the few parts that make
up the UTILITY Shovel Mixer. Simplicity predominates.
Construction is wonderfully sturdy and rigid. There is
nothing to get out of order. Unlike other mixers, the only
thing that wears out over a period of time are the de-
tachable, inexpensive shovel blades. Materials are of the
best, selected for strength and long life.

Specifications

The one-piece frame and ball race is made of angle and
channel steel, rigidly assembled. Ball race is a malleable
casting. Malleable shovel arms are bolted to frame. Bowl
is 26 inches in diameter, 11 y% inches deep. Cast iron bot-
tom with chilled ball and gear race. Heavy gauge steel
side, reinforced at top and base with angle irons. Steel
ball bearings. Capacity is 2% cubic feet, unmixed ma-
terials. Mixes perfect batch from 2 to 4 minutes. Ship-
ping weight on skids, 375 lbs. Price complete, $68.00.

Truck Mounted Shovel Mixers

For outside work, you
want a portable mixer.
The UTILITY Shovel Mix-
er is mounted on trucks for
that purpose, and equipped
with gas engine of correct
power. The design of this
portable shovel mixer of-
fers many advantages.
Easy to fill, easy to empty.
Discharges directly into wheelbarrow if desired. Can
be used in smaller spaces than most mixers. Same

simplicity and sturdi-
ness, as in skid-
mounted mixers plus
the convenience of
portability. Especial-
ly suited for piaster
and stucco contrac-
tors. Also a wonder-
ful mixer for side-
walk laying. (Speci-
